Don’t take a risk. Firearms trusts are good for more than most people think – if they are designed intelligently by an attorney who understands all the considerations. Done poorly, you can lose irreplaceable items or gain a felony. Here are just a few things a clever trust may do.

• Protect your spouse from unlawful possession
• Confidential ownership of NFA items
• potential group ownership of firearms and accessories
• Avoiding illegal transfers under “I-594”
• Protection against future legislation for firearms and accessories which are not currently restricted.
• Generation skipping inheritance  (i.e. parents might be unwilling or unable to keep the guns for your grandchildren)
• Provide clear guidance for your executor who doesn’t know about guns

One size does not fit all. This is too important to trust to the opinion of the guy on reddit or behind the counter of your favorite gun store. You want a trained expert.

There is a big difference between “it’s not illegal” and “my interests are well protected.”

Most of the online form trusts I’ve worked with are aimed at being “not illegal” for the broadest array of circumstances. -That assumes you put the correct information into them. They aren’t necessarily bad, but I would want something much better.

Never file for a tax stamp as “Individual.” Anyone who tells you to is giving you terrible advice.
